Shawn Johnston has been working in healthcare administratively (both frontline and behind the scenes) with marginalized populations within downtown Toronto for the past 9 years. Shawn believes that seeing the impact of clients successfully rebuild and pursue their goals and dreams prompted him to re-connect with his artistic side, and to further complete his BFA in Integrated Media at OCAD and plans to go on to his Masters in the upcoming year and sees himself utilizing the portal for research, communication and arts-based connections/opportunities.
When Shawn first moved here in 1993, he was part of a program offered by the Native Skills Centre at 401 Richmond, and more recently, through the students & faculty of the INVC program and student centre at OCADU.
Shawn saw the call for volunteers for the Indigenous Community Portal Taskforce and thought that this would be a great opportunity to explore community, communicate experiences & learn within an interesting new project environment.
Shawn is a part of the Uncover//Recover project developed by the Indigenous Visual Culture Program in partnership with OCADU and the Royal Ontario Museum.
On his free time, Shawn loves swimming and cycling.
