About Facilities Management and Development

Ryerson University’s Facilities Management and Development (FMD) department involves care of the physical environment of the campus and strategic planning for existing and future spaces, including the impacts of those spaces. FMD is responsible for functions including Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Services, Maintenance and Operations, Planning and Development, Project Management Office, Real Estate, and Sustainability.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Groundskeeper/Driver to join our team! In this role, you will maintain the appearance of University grounds by performing grounds maintenance and routine landscape and gardening activities. You will also operate University vehicles in the performance of duties.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

- Grounds maintenance: emptying litter/trash baskets, sweeping walkways, picking up litter, etc. from all campus property.
- Routine landscaping: cutting grass, trimming, raking leaves, pruning trees/bushes, etc.
- Clears snow and spreads traction grit (salt) at building entrances, sidewalks, stairways and platforms.
- Routine gardening tasks: watering, weeding and maintaining flower beds.
- Operates equipment such as: hand movers, string trimmers, snow blowers, pumps, compactors and other small engine powered equipment in a safe manner and ensures equipment is properly maintained.
- Assists with routine cleaning and/or moving inside the University.
Operates Ryerson vehicles according to University and Department of Motor Vehicle procedures and standards.
- Minor maintenance on vehicles such as fluid checks, tire pressure, lights operation and daily visual inspections.
- Maintains accurate records of trip mileage, gas purchases etc..
- Cleans and maintains the vehicles to support the University’s good public image.
- Reports any equipment and/or vehicle breakdowns, defects, repairs required to the Lead Hand/ Supervisor immediately.

Qualifications

Experience in groundskeeping and grounds maintenance in a large institutional environment including:
Experience driving a full size pick-up and/or van. Experience driving vehicles with snow plough and salter attachments preferred.
- Experience performing minor vehicle repairs such as: fluid checks, tire pressure, etc.
- Experience with and knowledge of the proper and safe use of landscaping and snow removal equipment.
- Valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s license.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Visual attentiveness is required to operate grounds equipment, and to ensure responsibilities are performed to established standards.
- Knowledge of most recent WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety Act and a demonstrated commitment in promoting a safe work environment.
- A demonstrated commitment to client service, specifically students, staff, and faculty;
Interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and sound judgement.
- Ability to work in undesirable and disagreeable conditions such as all weather conditions, varying temperatures and noisy environments and be exposed to dirt, waste products and hazardous material.
- Must be capable of heavy lifting and other strenuous physical activity to perform duties such as: continuous walking, standing, repetitive bending, turning, twisting, stretching, pushing, pulling and climbing.
- Must be willing and able to wear and use protective clothing.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment
- A demonstrated record of excellent attendance, reliability and dependability.
